I would not fear black plastic. I have used it on and off in my Upstate New York, USA garden over the years with no harmful effects. In fact, I have a huge stand of black-eyed Susans growing through black plastic. The only inconveience is when it begins to break down ... you often find small pieces of it when you did. Small price. I would embrace it, not fear it.
Thanks, Hollis. It's good to be able to hear another view (I've mostly come against negatives with it). If I was to use the same technique again I think though I will make sure it's of an horticultural standard, and not simply a dpc membrane (which I've had to add air-holes to myself, and am still unsure whether they are enough of them). Hindsight, eh? :o)

Btw, the wheelbarrow I've borrowed from my dad fitted through the gate okay - phew! :o)
