Total Allotment Time: 1 & 3/4 hrs.
Principle Tasks: Lightly forking over soil newly exposed from under plastic sheeting to remove any remaining perennial weed roots as in recent posts. Hoeing. Taking photos of an insect whilst being bitten by it!

I also thought the claim that the ground wasn't firm enough, as being the reason for the 'blown' cabbages, rather suspect. The caterpillars don't seem to be the culprits as they are growing side to side with ones that are 'in better heart'. Could well be an unstable variety.

Yes, I see what you mean. I did a quick image-search for midgies, and they are much more like the other insect which is a nuisence around sundown. I'll try to take a pic of this one - when I've plucked up the courage - and washed my legs! :o)

Just that first one I thought could of come out a little better (even when fully enlarged) although it might well just be the internet browser I use (Mozilla Firefox) and/or my monitor settings.

I'm waiting now to here if they let me into the British Insects Yahoo! group - probably not if they take a look at my legs! :o)
