I think I've been in denial over the fact that it might well be the common Whitebeam, as my book states that it can reach 25m in height = a lot of shade! :o( It does say though that it can stay shrub-sized, and I'm thinking that because mine is 'multi-boled' this might well be the case here. Also in the book, the drawing of the leaf of S. aria doesn't have the beginnings of 'lobes' like mine, but that pic you found certainly looks spot on. Sorbus aria (or a close relative) it is! :o)
